About this book deutschenglish
Mobility is an essential component to maintain independence an autonomy in old age and does contribute significantly to quality of life and well-being. Falls in old age are signs of morbidly altered and accelerated ageing processes (frailty) with substatial consequences for the patienst in terms of functional decline, illness, long-term care, institutionalisation and death. As a result, health and social security systems face financial burdens.
In the hospital setting, falls of older patiens are also frequent unwanted events. They are associated with injuries, increased length of hospital stay immobility, and disability. This leads to increased consumption of resources. Preventing in-hospital falls is thus an essential part of patient safety and is of great interest for both patients (independence) and health care service providers (reputation, economic results).
Based on a short presentation of the medicine of ageing, the geriatric syndrom ”fall“ is described in detail, and evidence-based opportunities of fall prevention are discussed. Fall-risk screening and multifactorial interventions are components of effective fall prevention. The present study is on the health economic analysis of selected fall risk screening instruments with subsequent fall prevention interventions for older hospital inpatients. The result of the analises are presented in detail and discussed within the context of current health policy discussions on quality assurance in hospitals and promoting of prevention in old age.
The interdisciplinary investigation structure presents interfaces, interactions and links between the two fields of health economics and geriatric medicine.
