About this book deutschenglish

The Theater am Marienplatz (TAM) in Krefeld has won worldwide fame in the experimental theatre and New Music scene for its extraordinary productions. Since 1976 the ensemble has been presenting plays, concerts, musical theatre, readings, dance theatre, and exhibitions on a regular base, also doing guest performances and inviting guest artists to their house. The repertoire primarily consists of works from the 20th and 21st century, especially those associated with Dadaism, Futurism, Expressionism, Surrealism, Wiener Gruppe (Vienna Group), and the Theatre of the Absurd. Amongst the authors often put on stage here are Samuel Beckett, John Cage, Kurt Schwitters, Gerhard Rühm, Erik Satie, or Karlheinz Stockhausen, to name but a few. In addition, there have been long-standing collaborations with prominent artists such as Mauricio Kagel.

Prominently featured at the TAM are experimental works reflecting, satirising, and thus questioning the use of language, human communication, but also theatre as an art form itself. Seasons and programs are often structured with the help of particular parameters challenging usual forms of presentation and expectations, sometimes even presenting their fringe repertory in extraordinary or even extreme performance situations.

As the first scientific treatise about the TAM this book combines elements of philology and theatre studies to exemplarily examine the artistic concept of this unique avant-garde stage by means of an analysis of nine language-based works and their respective mise-en-scène. Furthermore, the publication features interviews with longtime ensemble members, hitherto unpublished photographs, and a list of all known productions between 1976 and 2014, which (considering the numerous first performances by the TAM) should also be of interest to the empirical study of literature.
