About this book deutschenglish

Anglia (Angeln) was a region in the south-eastern part of the former Duchy of Schleswig in which people spoke a Danish vernacular. During the 19th century a language shift took place and Low and High German took over. Recent historians still suggest a rapid language shift and that it was a matter of prestige to become and speak German. But what role did the nationalistic elite play and how got languages stigmatized? This book gives a draft of the discourse of the Danish vernacular in the period of nationalism that became a mass movement later on. Also a view on the linguistic system of the Danish variety in Anglia is important for the identification as a part of a traditional language contact area. The national idea about language was to differentiate tongues, especially Danish and German, as much as possible. The history of the premodern area was quite different due to the convergence of the involved languages.

Following the concept of a “language history from below”, a new type of written documents from lesser educated people in the 19th is brought into focus in this book. Anglia that at this time was governed by the Danish composite state faced an economic and societal transformation. The documents show what language people used in letters, diaries and exercise books and that an increasing use of written communication took place. High German as a written language was predominant, but in some documents features of the vernaculars still were present, while other were produced on the background of existing High German patterns. An increasing broad literacy and the homogenization of language built the platform on which nationalism in the later period could be raised. High German as the written language was a key to the language shift in Anglia.
