About this book deutschenglish

In this book, a new type of grammar is developed. This approach is meant to explain, how a paragraph gradually unfolds, step by step, sentence by sentence. The theory, which has been inspired, above all, by textual linguistics and valency theory, aims at deepening understanding of these processes. The overall conception consists in a tightly woven integration of structuralism, pragmatics, psycholinguistics and sociolinguistics, designed to suit the explanation of individual language knowledge and language production. Sentence descriptions lack complex constituent hierarchies, which are replaced by the idea of horizons to the continuous act of wording. The pragmatic approach of regarding language as a free, mostly improvised context-driven activity of playing with structures is transformed into a mixed routinized parallelism of syntactically as well as pragmatically oriented constructive acts. Sentences are seen as fundamentally adaptive forms, meant to be inserted into a context that is being developed. It is this position that accounts for the major part of their sequential patterns. In the book, some 70 types of adaptive sentence forms are presented. Other characteristics of this theory follow present tendencies or imply innovative views: grammar and lexicon constitute an unseparable whole; the division into a syntax of the oral register and a syntax of the written register is overcome; speech acts are interpreted in the sense of expectations on the recipient side linked to mutual discourse type knowledge; conceptualisation includes image elements between a rudimentary and rich imaginary space; semantic functions are classified in a cross-wise manner, combining verb classification and abstract Fillmore-roles. – The grammar has Spanish as its main descriptive object. It is applicable, though, to other languages as well, which can be seen from a couple of analyses alongside the discussions in the book.
