The primary school has always been an institution of heterogeneity which is characterized by adaptability and being reform-minded because of the diverse demands that the institution is facing. The seventeen articles of this collective volume focus on four framing topics which are depicted in the chapters. The adaptability of this type of school is explicitly discussed in chapter one portraying the development from the constitution of the primary school as an institution up to the present day. As a starting point for contemporary reforms, the influence of inclusion is not being neglected by the authors. Connecting to this, the second chapter aims at current challenges with different specific emphases. The discussion in this chapter shows the multifaceted and demanding areas of responsibility of this institution and reflects problems that might occur from these. The authors do not miss out on developing ideas how to use the potential which the primary school already provides and others that can be implemented in the future. Subsequently in the third chapter considerations are made asking how the primary school pedagogy needs to develop further to meet the requirements of today. At this point a variety of different perspectives is given pointing out topics and concepts of the primary school pedagogy as well as reflections on the conditions of the education of (prospective) teachers. This volume ends with chapter four with a view to future demands and challenges concerning the primary school. The requirement of implementing inclusion is discussed in this final chapter by focusing on structural conditions as well as methodological-didactical arrangements that are needed to improve learning.

The volume at hand provides a deepening and wide insight in aspects and questions which are linked to the primary school changing. Therefore the collected edition can be useful for teachers in schools as well as for researchers and students at universities and colleges to gain compatible insights into primary school pedagogy and the concomitant discourse.
