Purchasing companies and brands in the textile- and garment sector are exposed to continuous pressure of international competition. Based on global production- and supply chains and under the premise of an absolute reduction in costs, the successful implementation of outsourcing processes, which means shifting labor-intensive production steps to developing and emerging countries, entail negative effects on the employees of the supplying organizations.

With regard to this global relocation of production steps in the textile and clothing sector the Peoples Republic of China plays an absolute leadership role, especially after the termination of the Multifibre Agreement (MFA) and the Agreement of Textiles and Clothings (ATC) at the end of 2004. Taking into account the economic and social background, the present book proves, based on the described working conditions in the Chinese textile and clothing industry, that People’s economic growth is not necessarily accompanied by an improvement in social circumstances and living conditions of the population. Subsequently traditional, already practiced approaches which are intended to improve the current working conditions in China, will be presented, followed by innovative internal and external strategies for a successful implementation of socially sustainable business practices in the textile and clothing industry in China.

Given the fact that in economic terms the Peoples Republic of China as the leading global economic power is expected to assume the double amount of the US economy in 2050, the presented solution approaches additionally take into consideration the fact that regarding the complex economic linkages with the PRC an integrated and forward-looking perspective in thinking and acting is absolutely required. In the light of social value changes only a sustainable corporate policy of Western purchasing organizations makes a significant contribution for a positive development of society, for their material prosperity and social peace.
