About this book deutschenglish

“The author convinces and succeeds in actively combining theoretical knowledge with methodological approaches and empirical findings. One can assume that the work will stimulate innovation policies and sustainability discussions in several ways: we have not seen such comprehensive and in-depth national or international secondary analysis like here, where theory, methodology and practice in the field of applied innovation and sustainability research meet in such an eye opening and up-to-date way. The multiple applications of the empirical results generated by the author for further research alone, illustrate the special status of her work”.

Professor Dr. Werner F. Schulz

In the future the successful combination of innovation and sustainability will play an increasingly important role in tackling the global challenge to secure competitiveness. Sustainable business is the engine for innovation, which ensures good long-term revenue and competitive advantage for the company. It follows that for a successful business innovation management, the systematic consideration of sustainability is an important driver for innovation and needs early strategic detection, with a view to competitiveness and stakeholder dialogue.

In the business practice, the strategic integration of the sustainability paradigm throughout the entire innovation process represents a challenge for many companies. Sustainability has been taken into account so far often only in an “ad hoc” way or addresses only some aspects. The authors work is positioned in exactly such a context, and deals with the central question of research on the extent to which sustainability can serve as a driver for the innovation process. The focus of the present work is on analysis of factors that influence sustainability during the innovation process and the resulting concept of sustainable innovation management. With the help of the three-dimensional “SInn-Model” that she developed as well as the related practical and application-oriented “SInn-Management-Model”, the author shows the opportunities and challenges of linking sustainability and the innovation process and offers a specific orientation and a framework for business decision makers.

The author focuses her work on the very real link existing between sustainability and innovation. The assumed positive relationship is confirmed on the basis of a comprehensive qualitative analysis of literature using nearly 140 existing studies and publications on the impact of sustainability on successful innovation. In the context of the present work, the author shows that the integration of sustainability in the innovation process is a prerequisite for any success of innovation. This implies the principle of sustainable development, i.e. the integration of ecological, economic, social and regulatory aspects of the innovation process, as well as overcoming alleged trade-offs.
