Sport is developing remarkably quickly. It is constantly growing through new trends and events. Sport disciplines are almost innumerable and it is often difficult to distinguish one from another. Even sports science struggles in the face of the multitude of different sports and activities. In spite of that, this book aims to bring some order to that diversity.

Sporting achievements, the constant desire to perform better and to compare performances are the prime characteristics of sport. For that reason this book classifies sports according to the multifaceted aspects of achievement. This classification starts with the structure of tasks which can be broken down into sport motor skills. These tasks are divided according to the type of sport and are realised through motor skill actions. The constituent components of the tasks are at the same time the interim goals of the tasks and the conditions for realising the tasks. It is not possible to get a detailed overview of the tasks, but it is possible to identify the goals and the conditions of the tasks. Our construct identifies eight classes of aims and seven classes of conditions. The steps involved in realising the tasks are intentionally omitted. Nevertheless, on the basis of the classified tasks, we will discuss the special requirements of tactics and techniques by working through examples from different sports.

The classification organises tasks comprehensively and clearly. We have included hitherto-unknown tasks, because they complement the above-mentioned method. Moreover, the classes of aims and conditions are not fixed: they can be further developed. Finally, we can try to use a given classification system for tasks with different orientations, for example teaching, learning, exercising and training.
