The oldest statutes of the Rostock Medical Faculty, written between 1421 and 1425, included the medical curriculum at this university in the German north. That is, they prescribed the course content and the exam schedules for Bachelors, Licentiates and Doctors, and regulated the fees were to be paid for teaching and examinations. In addition, the Rostock statutes European comparison contain quite early determinations on anatomical dissections of cadavers for teaching purposes and the oldest apothecary order in northern Germany, one of the oldest German pharmacist orders at all.
The statutes of the Rostock Medical Faculty are presented for the first time here in a scholarly edition. Its Latin text is reproduced in parallel with a German translation. Both the rules on courses and examinations as well as the texts of Greek and Islamic origin that should be taught in Latin, and their authors are commented in detail. Besides testimony forms for Licentiates and Bachelors of medicine are offered with a translation. The result is a vivid picture of the study of medicine in the pre-modern era that enriches not only the story of medical education at the Rostock alma mater, which in 2019 celebrates its 600th anniversary, but also the general university and scientific history to previously unconsidered aspects.Möchten Sie Ihre wissenschaftliche Arbeit publizieren?
