About this book deutschenglish

The generation of heat from renewable resources has been greatly expanded in recent years. As a result, the share of renewable energy in total final energy consumption for heat in Germany has increased to 11 % as of 2011. This is mainly the product of different governmental incentive programs and regulations concerning renewable energy (including the Renewable Energy Sources Act, EEG, and Renewable Energy Heat Act, EEWärmeG). The increasing awareness of the importance of renewable energy is coupled with a debate about its impacts. Costs, safety concerns and environmental impacts are within the focus of discussion.

This political, economic and scientific discourse raises questions about the sustainability of our renewable heat supply with regard to environmental, economic and social criteria.

With the Brundtland Report of 1987 and since the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) in Rio de Janeiro in 1992, sustainability has become a buzzword for decision makers. "Sustainable development", "sustainable management", "sustainable energy and heat supply": The concept of sustainability has been used for everything that is to appear good and right.

In this context, questions arise as how to operationalize sustainability (e.g. clearly defined and observable) for specific cases and how to identify suitable approaches for measuring sustainability.

What about the sustainability of our heat supply from renewable energy? How can such a sustainability be adequately measured? This book answers both of these questions. A multi-criteria decision analysis and the calculation of social costs are carried out for different heat supply technologies. It will be shown, therefore, how to operationalize sustainability in the field of heat supply of residential buildings and which technologies meet the criteria of this sustainability assessment.
