About this book deutschenglish
Since summer 2008, the commercial shipping branch has been suffering a serious crisis which is ongoing until today. Because of over-capacities hundreds of seagoing vessels stay unused and shipping companies face losses. The crisis was caused during the world economic crisis, improved again in the years to follow and but then affected the commercial shipping branch again.
Due to the crisis especially the container shipping branch suffers over-capacities. With more than 30% of container ships owned by German owners, Germany is known as the dominant country of this type of ships in the world. In the decades before the crisis began, thousands of German investors had invested billions of Euros in ship funds. This development had been promoted because of missing alternative investment opportunities and the tonnage tax regime.
This publication presents the phenomenon of shipping cycles and describes the historical crisis in the maritime industry. One major topic are the risks faced by investors and shipping companies when financing ships by funds. German corporate and tax laws are shown in their basics.
The main focus of the commercial shipping analysis is the container shipping branch. It is compared with the cruise shipping branch which has not been affected by the crisis.
Next to the genesis of the current shipping crisis the long duration of the crisis is also discussed by describing the strategies of liner shipping companies.
This publication includes a detailed basic part which introduces the topic. It ensures that people outside the shipping branch can follow the content all the time.
