The present volume came into being by reason of the 60th birthday of Professor Ernst Ludolf Münch. A total of 19 articles by colleagues and students of the professor portrays the thematic diversity of his historical researches, which he has now been engaged in at the University of Rostock for around 35 years. The collection includes essays on mediaeval history, Mecklenburgian regional history, agrarian history, history of the nobility and the history of the city of Rostock and its university. One text refers to the interdisciplinary collaboration with urban archaeology. Two further contributions extend beyond this thematic framework to the history of Polish-German neighbourliness and the approach to historical pictures.

The timeframe of the essays stretches from 11th century through to the second half of the 20th century. The topics investigated are as various as the veneration of St Gertrude in North Germany, the beginnings of anatomy at the Rostock Medical Faculty in the 15th/16th centuries, the political dimension of beer brewing in Mecklenburg between 1516 and 1755, adultery in Mecklenburgian villages in the 18th century, the Grand Dukes of Mecklenburg-Schwerin, the barracking of the military in Rostock in the 19th century and the conscription of horses from agriculture into the Wehrmacht at the start of and of Rostock aircraft construction specialists in the Soviet Union after the end of the Second World War.
