This book addresses various aspects of the process of regionalization, especially as they interact with regional peace and security issues in the ECCAS region. Particular emphasis is placed on political aspects of integration and the book reviews institutions and policies under which the process is taking place in order to establish a solid knowledge base on the Central African regional process and help the member countries and other development partners in formulating appropriate policies that can be translated into feasible strategic interventions and realizable actions. It identifies the main security challenges in the region and engages in the analysis of the various aspects of the ECCAS security architecture which is part of the continental security structure under the auspices of the African Union. In addition, the book makes a critical analysis of the role played by the European Union in the design and implementation of the Central African regional security architecture. The book ultimately suggests the adoption of the multi-level governance approach through the principle of subsidiarity in order to facilitate the participation of a broad base of actors in the region’s integration process. The book is suitable for policymakers, non-state actors, researchers and students of international relations.
