Due to the lack of research in the field of Ukrainian-German language contact, this qualitative empirical scientific work is of great importance. Therefore, this research attempts to answer some of the numerous open questions regarding Ukrainian-German multilingualism.

Because of the war in Ukraine, the number of Ukrainian learners has increased in German-speaking countries. In addition to Ukrainian as the first language, German has become the second language for children. The migration-related Ukrainian-German bilingualism has prompted research into second language acquisition among learners from Ukraine.

Multilingualism usually brings with it a variety of language contact phenomena. These characterise both the linguistic landscape and the identity of multilingual speakers. The aim of this research is to identify which language contact phenomena are expressed by Ukrainian children. It is also important to investigate which written language skills Ukrainian children have in both languages and which potential for promoting German and Ukrainian can be recognised.

In addition, this book explains various language contact phenomena between German and Ukrainian, such as code-switching, code-mixing and transfer. The language contact phenomena are illustrated with many examples.

Language contact influences the involved linguistic systems. While word borrowings from German enter the Ukrainian language, Ukrainian expressions can be also used in German of Ukrainians. Such phenomena illustrate the adaptability of languages. This book explains German borrowings in modern Ukrainian. It also shows how the duration of language contact can influence the first and the second language of speakers.

The contrastive language comparison between German and Ukrainian is equally important. This makes it possible to analyse similarities and differences between languages at different linguistic registers, to explain interferences for German and Ukrainian learners. It helps to learn both of languages and to promote multilingualism among learners.
