About this book deutschenglish
Can we imagine a world without books? More than five hundred years after the invention of printing, books are published in increasing numbers year after year. And as audio-books and e-books demonstrate, books have responded to changing habits of reception. Nevertheless, books and literature can easily fall into oblivion as the article on David Vogel, a Jewish author who was killed in Auschwitz, illustrates. Beyond that, the article “Roll over Ibsen, Shakespeare and all the rest of it” shows how theatre directors can ruin the cultural heritage in their adaptations of classical plays. However, literature also builds up long-time continuities in dealing with subjects which never lose their impact on imagination and everyday life. The chapters on “Travelling as a literary topic”, “Demon: money” and “Happiness as a subject in fiction” depict the significance of these subjects throughout literary history.
