About this book deutschenglish

Verbal periphrases are widespread constructions consisting of at least two verbs that form a functional unity. The investigation of these constructions in Ancient Greek offers multiple new research findings in the field of grammaticalization: as Ancient Greek shows a complex literary attestation since the 8th century B.C., it is possible to follow the development of several periphrastic constructions from the very beginning to their final decrease. Furthermore, Ancient Greek does not have a fixed normative grammar that could hinder different spoken phenomena to appear in the literary texts. Constructions in an embryonic state next to far grammaticalized periphrases can therefore also be seen. To register these constructions and to define their developmental state the book starts with a detailed discussion of the most recent research on grammaticalization. The research results, which are commonly based on modern languages, are transferred to the Ancient Greek language material and are enhanced on the basis of this new perspective. Based on these linguistic preliminaries a detailed philological and linguistic investigation of the Ancient Greek periphrastic constructions follows. It is focused on periphrases with the auxiliaries eimí ‚be‘, gígnomai ‚become‘, ékhō ‚have‘ and on constructions with the positional verbs héstēka ‚stand‘, keĩmai ‚lie‘ and káthēmai ‚sit ‘ from 800 to 400 B.C. Not only does the book analyze verbal periphrases in Ancient Greek, but it also discusses many instances of the Ancient Greek literature on philological grounds. „Die Verbalperiphrase im Altgriechischen – Synchronie und Diachronie“ will therefore be of use not only for general and Indo-European linguistics but also for classical philologists.
