This text deals with the ability of moral decision making. Moral decision making is a competence that can be developped when it is supported by the social background or by input from school. This input may be taken from the behaviour that a real person showed or from literary figures. Real persons as well as literary figures are confronted with situations where conflicting social rules or norms are interacting to a dilemma situation.

I suggest that the perspectives of those persons who are involved in such a situation are described in form of a short text that I call a vignette. With the help of these vignettes students get an idea of the different perspectives involved and have the chance to decide which of the offered positions they personally would prefer. They have to back up their decisions with arguments in a discussion or in form of a written text.

Astrid Lindgren’s life is full of those situtations where she had to decide what is right or wrong and why it is so. I start with some situations when she was a teeny girl or a young adult. Later on when she was married she had to define what a good partner, mother and housewife should be and do. After the years of her immense literary success she decided to intervene in actual politics in Sweden. Those themes fit more with students from the 9th or 10th grade upwards. At the same time she earned a lot of money and had to decide how to spend it. As a good Swedish citoyenne she gave a lot of money to caritative projects especially for helping poor or ill children. All of these decisions and situations are still of some relevance even for the students and their social orientation.

In some of Astrid Lindgren’s works you can find situations where the figures have to make moral decisions. I give a short description of these situations. Again I offer some vignettes which demonstrate the perspectives of the involved literary figures.

The students have to learn step by step discussion-formats and writings-formats as well, when they try to explain their moral standpoint to themselves and to others. The book offers some examples. Meanwhile it is wellknown that decison making is one thing but does not include automatically that the person will act in the same way. So a moral curriculum can only be successful when ist offers a moral school life, too. I add some examples which seem to be very sustainable.
