This study deals with the development of fintech locations in Germany from a geography of finance perspective. For the analysis of the development of fintech at different locations, the evolutionary economy theory and models of founding ecosystems are chosen as research approaches. The focus here is on Berlin and Frankfurt am Main, which are important emerging centers for fintechs in Germany. Frankfurt as a banking center and Berlin as a regional financial center and major hub for the digital economy are subject to path-dependent developments triggered by decision-making processes of the respective financial center actors and historical events. Today, fintechs are establishing themselves as equal players in the German financial centers among banks and insurance companies. In this way, they actively shape the appearance of financial centers as unique ecosystems. The different starting points of the fintech locations Berlin and Frankfurt am Main, which form the foundation for future development, become clear in this analysis. The aim of this study is to analyse the development of fintechs in the financial centers of Berlin and Frankfurt am Main and the role played by local financial center players, above all banks. Increasingly, banks are developing cooperations with fintechs, although some fintechs are appearing as relevant competitors for banks. As a result, Berlin is by far the most important location for fintechs in Germany and is increasingly being perceived internationally. The development of the fintech ecosystem in Berlin has self-reinforcing effects which suggest a path dependency. Frankfurt is the second largest location for fintechs in Germany and has undergone a very dynamic development initiated by the local financial center players. Frankfurt’s decades-long focus on the classic financial sector is also the biggest obstacle in the development of the leading fintech location in Germany.
