About this book deutschenglish
The imperialistic discourse has produced imaginative and homogenized geographical entities such as Orient, West, Balkans and Eurasia. The author adds the Caucasus (Kavkaz) to this list and dismantles the South Caucasus (Zakavkaz’e) as a Soviet-Russian construct.
The conceptual and regional history of the South Caucasus as well as the analysis of its topographical, nationalistic and further conceptualizations allows him to relativize the region’s borders on the mental map and to demonstrate the cultural-historical bonds between its peoples, on the one side, and Turkey and Iran, on the other. The boundaries of the post-Soviet periphery get blurred so that the region expands into Eastern Anatolia and Northern Iran and is characterized semiotically as a palimpsest of numerous cultural sediments and continuities.
The author takes the initiative to use the terminology of Cultural and Translation Studies and to redesign the region as a culturally dynamic contact and transfer zone, shaped by migration and translation processes. A change of perspective in the integration policy of the nations in question on the basis of their cultural syncretism is proposed. The author confronts their centrifugal disintegrative tendencies and their political impotence to resolve the regional security crisis and to establish sustainable peace with a new project which is held in the spirit of cultural xenology and citizen diplomacy and aims at enlightenment in terms of cultural psychology as well as at civic contact, dialogue and exchange.
The personal experience of the bilingual author who grew up in the cultural in-between zone of a Russian family in Armenia and has studied at the Faculty of Translation Studies of Mainz University contributes to the foundation of the book and provides the insights with a personal dimension. Having participated in several transregional initiatives for the youth of the countries of the region, he emphasizes the great potential of the projects that promote transnational communication and cooperation in a depoliticized space.
